José Fernando Vázquez, AIA at hacedor/maker: arquitectos (h:m/a), was challenged by the owner of this residence within Plantation Village in Dorado Beach, to create the perfect outdoor retreat within a very limited space.
Multiple decking products were considered before selecting Kebony as the best choice. While PVC decking offers low maintenance, José feared that it would get too hot in the sun and also didn’t like that the simulated wood appearance of PVC can cost just as much as real wood. For these reasons PVC was eliminated from the running. Looking for something more natural, Teak was also evaluated. However, while many suppliers claim their product is responsibly forested, obtaining actual documentation of this can be difficult so José continued to seek a more reliable eco-friendly alternative.
Liking that the Kebony technology enhances sustainable species like FSC®-certified Radiata Pine, making it the most ecologically responsible option, José chose Kebony for its natural beauty, sustainability and enhanced performance metrics that made it suitable for an area exposed to both sun and water. After exposure to the rays of the Puerto Rican sun, the Kebony decking has naturally developed a subtle silvery-gray patina, complementing the overall design of this outdoor spa patio.
