Eco-friendly Kebony wood immerses new vacation residence in Snæfellsnes
Set amid the enchanting haven of Snæfellsnes, West Iceland, ‘Eagles Dream’ is a secluded residence designed by Gudmundur Jonsson, offering guests an immersive nature experience. Elevated on concrete columns and clad in sustainably sourced Kebony wood, the architecture mirrors the surrounding mountain ridges while providing an open-floor plan and long-bay glazed windows that frame dramatic panoramic views of icy blue waters, greenery, and peaks.
The discovery of an eagle feather on-site inspired the house’s concept, symbolizing an eagle poised to fly. To preserve nature, no blasting was involved in construction; instead, concrete columns elevate the house, allowing wildlife to pass beneath. Kebony wood, chosen for its durability and aesthetic appeal, blends seamlessly with the landscape, transitioning from rich brown to silver-grey over time.
Inside, veneer-clad pine walls match the exterior, creating continuity. Floors and bathroom walls feature Icelandic Bluestone, further connecting the home to its environment. ‘Eagles Dream’ exemplifies a commitment to sustainable design and harmony with nature.
