Kunstsilo Kristiansand – from Grain Silo to Cultural Icon
In Odderøya in Kristiansand, you’ll find Kunstsiloen, one of Northern Europe’s most exciting art and culture centers. The old grain silo from 1935 has been transformed into a spectacular museum that puts Southern Norway on the world map.
Kunstsilo opened on May 11, 2024, and is a continuation of the Southern Norway Art Museum, now with a new name, new location and a large expansion of the art collection. Kunstsiloen in Kristiansand has a goal of becoming the Nordic region’s best museum of modernist art.
Nominated for one of the World’s most Recognized Architecture Awards
The spectacular museum Kunstsilo in Kristiansand has received international attention and the museum has won one of the most prestigious architecture awards in the world – Prix Versailles 2025. Kunstsilo is the only museum from Scandinavia to be included on the prestigious list, and was competing for the title of the world’s most beautiful museum, along with museums from France, Indonesia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and the USA, among others.
Competing for a Total of Three Awards
The nomination gives Kunstsilo the opportunity to win three main prizes that will be awarded in December: Prix Versailles, as well as special prizes for best interior and exterior. The award ceremony itself takes place at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, where innovative and sustainable architecture projects from all over the world are honored.
An Architectural and Sustainable Attraction
Instead of building new, it was decided to rebuild the existing grain silo from 1935, which is a clear example of circular economy and reuse of materials and buildings. By reusing existing buildings, the need for new production of materials and energy-intensive construction processes is reduced, which results in a lower climate footprint than a new building.
Kebony Character has been chosen for the roof terrace, pier and pier skirt, as well as the main terrace in the middle of the building. The wood gives the rough expression with concrete and steel an elegant and soft counterpart.
Building of the Year
Since opening, Kunstsilo has attracted both national and international attention and the museum has already been named Building of the Year by Byggeindustrien. It was highlighted how the architecture itself has become an attraction in itself, the combination of modern design, culture and history makes the building completely unique.
The Silo as the Museum’s Sculptural Centerpiece
One of the most eye-catching architectural features of Kunstsilo is the use of the original concrete silos as a sculptural element. The silo consists of 30 cylinders. Between these cylinders there are 18 rhombus-shaped shafts. The silos are 39 meters high. The lower part of the massive cylinders is cut 20 meters above the ground, and the result is a magnificent space that opens the building in a dramatic and genuine way.
The entire first floor is open and accessible, and is designed to function as a public urban space for Kristiansand. Here, art, architecture and city life meet in an arena that invites both residents and visitors to experience the museum in new ways.
Puts Kristiansand on the World Map
The nomination for Prix Versailles underlines how Kunstsilo has put Kristiansand on the world map as an important cultural destination. With its distinctive architecture and strong cultural profile, the museum appears as a new source of pride for the whole of Scandinavia.
