“We will have to close SpardaWelt Freilichtbühne at Killesberg!”

This message from the public authorities in Stuttgart in 2017 came as a shock to the many supporters of this idyllically located stage. For various reasons it was no longer possible to use the amphitheatre for performances – among other things, using the Douglas spruce benches for seating was no longer feasible. After the architects asp Architekten GmbH had presented their assessment and after discussion with the event organiser in Stuttgart, the decision was taken to renovate the venue.

“For us, the appearance and sustainability especially were the deciding factors,”, says Eberhard Becker, architect and director of asp Architekten GmbH. “The fact that Kebony has practically no splinters will be an extra plus for concert-goers in the coming concert season.” The first step was to replace wooden benches and backrests. In total, more than 400 m2 of Kebony Character (28 x 120 mm) was used.

The Kebony was provided by the timber supplier Holzhandlung Wider of Stuttgart. Director Uli Hanßum says: “Once Kebony had been chosen, it all went very quickly. There was very, very little time from delivery at the end of May until the first concert with new benches in early June. And this was in spite of skilled workers having full order books at the time. But that just shows how quick and easy Kebony is to prepare!”
