Villa Grannes

Lene Moen Grannes lives in a beautiful villa outside Stavanger with her husband Lars Rune and their children Lune, Leo and Liam, as well as their dog Midas. Lene is both an interior architect and architect, and the house was awarded the “Outstanding Build Quality” prize in 2022. The dream of Villa Grannes emerged during their student days.

On a small farm outside Stavanger

Villa Grannes is built on the family farm in Stavanger, and the dream of building their own house started during student days. The family farm has much history they wanted to honor and preserve. Much of the farmhouse had to be demolished due to mold and pest damage. They therefore chose to build new, but with inspiration from the farm’s origins. Architect Lene designed the house, which has a calm yet spectacular expression. Two building volumes are connected via a central section made entirely of glass, a “glass box”.

The heart of the house

Lene proudly describes the house she designed together with her husband. The whole concept is that one part of the house is a more private and enclosed zone. This section contains bedrooms, office, bathrooms, laundry room, and guest room. The other section is more open and social with living room, kitchen, library, and cinema room.
In the core lies the heart of the house!
This includes a slide from the second floor to the first floor, as well as a 6-meter-high stained glass window adorning the stairwell.

The entrance is recessed, creating a beautiful atrium. This solution was also chosen to shield the glass facade from sun and wind. She says it’s fantastic to live in a house that is 100% adapted to their own needs and wishes. Many smart solutions help their daily lives flow better.

“I wanted a playful house for our children, but also for us adults. A home where children and adults can have fun together!” says Lene Moen Grannes

Choice of cladding and decking

Lene explains that they chose Kebony Character for cladding and decking due to the combination of maintenance-free qualities and aesthetics. Lene uses Kebony extensively in her projects and says that Kebony is a quality product to trust. She loves the warmth and depth that Kebony Character brings to the house’s clean facade. Additionally, she appreciates the natural aging process with the brown and gray color nuances that develop in the wood over time.

“We are so pleased and proud of how the deck and cladding match the house. It gives the best first impression of the house”

A dream becomes reality

A dream from student days has now become reality. The house was completed in 2021 and has since received much attention, largely due to its unique and playful appearance, practical functionality, and construction technique. In 2022, all their work on the dream was applauded with the Building Design Award in Stavanger – a prize that honors good building practices and architecture.
